Long time readers might remember that back in 2008 I managed to get a photo of the partial solar eclipse with the help of a few clouds to stop the camera just washing out. On that occasion there was only a small part of the sun that was obscured. Yesterday's eclipse was an altogether more impressive sight, and yet again the cloud cover was just perfect for taking photos with a normal digital camera.
Both photos were taken from my doorstep, the one on the left at 9:11am and the one on the right at 9:35am which was roughly the peak of the eclipse. If you missed it, then you'll have to wait until 2026 so see a similar eclipse in the UK.
I was rushing everything back undercover as it rained here. The second shot is a cracker.
Shame you didn't have good weather for it. The second shot is definitely better, I think the clouds moved after I'd set the first one up which meant the exposure compensation was too great.
If you have the RAW file I have a couple of different converters that can push or pull 2.5 stops and 3 at a pinch.
Unfortunately I've only got a jpeg. While my old camera would shoot RAW and this one is a more modern version there isn't a RAW setting.
The clouds were perfect here at Heswall. Just enough to make it work at the minimum exposure possible on the camera. I'll have to see my cardiac specialist to make sure I'm around for the 2026 one!
It clouded over here in Eagleton just as the eclipse started so I didn't get a photo. However at Callanish the sun was just hazy enough for good photos like yours.
